We were offered an upgrade to a suite at a much reduced rate and accepted the offer. The room was huge comfortable and well equipped for a pleasant stay. However the room and bathroom looked as if they hadn't been used for a while. In need of an update and tired it also could have been cleaner. A bit disappointing.
On saying that the rest of the hotel was very clean, comfortable and welcoming. Staff were all helpful and friendly, and attentive. The food was excellent and the menus had a great selection to choose from.
I would definitely visit again, but as the standard rooms are more modern and comfortable I would ask to view any room before agreeing to any update

My daughter and I have just had the loveliest two days spent at the Barony Castle. The food was absolutely fantastic, large portions and value for money, the prawn and salmon salad was perfect. We also treated ourselves to an afternoon tea on our last day before venturing home, and we were thrilled with it. We've had afternoon tea in many places and would easily put this in the top three. I did have a tumble getting into the bath tubs which are dated and deep especially for a shorty such as me. However the hotel was quick to move us into a shower only room so I would suggest if you aren't quite able to manoeuvre into a bath or like me short, ask for a room with only a shower. The rooms are all very different, some keeping the style of a castle, some very modern, but all very comfortable with all the amenities. A shout out to the staff who were the friendliest bunch we met on our travels around Scotland they would go above and beyond to please. A special thank you to Noah who not only greets everyone with that huge beautiful smile with the warmest welcome, he also couldn't have done more for me after my tumble. He's such an asset to the hotel, a larger than life personality but also caring for everyone's needs. Thanks so much xx We will be back... The hotel is 20 mins from Traquair House (a must visit) and 10 mins from Peebles town (cocoa black chocolate shop also a must visit) Rosslyn Chapel is only 30 mins away and a just visit. So this hotel is perfectly situated for sightseeing or simply being away from the hustle and bustle of life

There are few hotels anywhere, which can offer a stay somewhere which is immersed in history. The food was well above average, the room was more than adequate and the service I can only describe as, okay. Customer care was frighteningly bad when the fire alarm went off at 06:30. My wife and I took the emergency exit to the car park. Thankfully it was dry and we stood beside other guests in gowns in the car park. After a little while, an employee arrived by car and strolled past us into the hotel. He eventually returned to say everything was okay and you could return to your rooms. I was very disappointed by the lack of communication.

Excellent experience. We went for an overnight and benefitted from lovely summery weather which allowed us to explore the ample grounds. Food was delicious and the staff couldn't be more helpful and polite. Highly Recommend.

My son and daughter in law (who live in Surrey) recently stayed 2 nights at the Barony Castle Hotel. I joined them for dinner their first night. The food was absolutely fantastic, first class. A wide range of dishes (the seafood platter was fabulous - so glad we ordered two for 3 of us to share). For mains, I had roasted wood pigeon on a pearl barley risotto while my son had the steak and DIL had the fish - all of us are “foodies” and dined all over the world in some of the best restaurants and I have to say the Barony Castle Hotel is right up there with the best of them! The waiting staff were young, but could not be faulted. Friendly, helpful and willing even when the restaurant was buzzing, nothing was too much trouble for them. They were overseen by deputy manager Sarah, who was also very friendly, chatty and bent over backwards to ensure we were happy with everything. At the end of our night, my son was preparing to escort me on the 10 minute walk back to my accommodation, but on hearing I was staying elsewhere that night, rather than have my son see me back safely, Sarah insisted on driving me back in her own car, allowing my son and his wife to enjoy some after dinner drinks in the lounge bar before retiring for the night. The food, the service and the friendliness of this lovely team of people cannot be faulted! This hotel holds a 4 star rating but based on our experience, it deserves 10 stars!! Thank you Sarah and “the boys”, for making our family catch up even more enjoyable than usual - we will most definitely be back!!!

For the discerning tourist and traveller: do not stay here unless better options are all fully booked. The house and rooms urgently need refurbishment. They just keep the place running with special offers and an ok value for money. But we considered it still overpriced for the quality experienced. Sad, because this house could be a gem in this location. It‘s not. The best about it is it‘s advertisement online. The restaurant: uninspired, not meticulous, not bad but not worth to stay here for. Hopefully the Barony soon finds new ownership and management or at least a more concerning chef.

Beautiful building. Public areas good and staff lovely. Room was very disappointing, we’ve had bigger and better at Premier Inn. Dinner was good but breakfast was very run of the mill buffet style. When it’s bed and breakfast you don’t expect to pay £5 extra for smoked haddock or eggs Benedict! Would consider staying again but only at half the price
